tail
Modern Description

written by Susanne M Hoffmann

In principle, "the tail" is the hindmost part of an animal. However, as a metaphor it is also used to describe longish appearances in the sky that seem to follow something else. For instance, a comet or a meteor has a "head" and a "tail".
